Rethinking Math Instruction Through a Literacy Lens

Many teachers who confidently teach literacy feel real anxiety about teaching math. Often, this is because math instruction hasn't been approached as language instruction. But math is a language, with its own vocabulary, syntax, and comprehension strategies, and teachers already have powerful literacy tools they can apply to it.

In this session, two passionate, experienced math educators will show how to bring reading and writing practices into math class: explicit vocabulary-building, sentence stems for math talk, multi-sensory strategies for building number sense, fact fluency practices modeled on literacy fluency instruction, story-based word problem analysis, dedicated time to practice strategies, and formative assessment beyond paper-and-pencil tests.

Participants will leave with concrete, low-prep strategies to shift their mindset about teaching math and build a classroom culture where math talk and multi-sensory learning are as natural as literacy instruction.
